ARC
The race
The ARC is an annually race starting in Las Palmas and finishing in Rodney Bay (Santa Lucia, Caribbean). Over the years it has become the most popular Trans Atlantic race with more then 200 yachts participating. Many participants use the ARC as a start of a cruise or a series of races (BVI Spring Regatta, Antigua Race Week, St. Maarten Heineken Regatta) in the Caribbean, or as a start of a trip around the world. The ARC is open to yachts between 8,23 and 25 meter lengths overall. Apart from these restrictions yachts have to comply with a long list of safety requirements.
Participants
So far 228 yachts have entered for the ARC 2002, representing 23 countries. The British are best represented with 99 entries, followed by Germany with 27 and the US with 21. From the Netherlands 7 yachts have entered so far.
Media
Over the years, the ARC has developed vast media coverage in many countries over the world. As the international yachting magazine Yachting World is one of the sponsors of the event, a lot of information can be found there. Also the Dutch magazines Zeilen and Nautique have been publishing regularly about the ARC.
For those staying at home the race can be followed via the internet at www.worldcruising.net with daily position updates and weather information. As far as technical possible, live updates will be available at www.stortemelk.net.
